The National Offender Management Service (NOMS) National Reducing Re-Offending Action Plan recognises the link between maintaining good family ties and reducing re-offending. This project aims to work with a partnership of organisations to offer better support for families in their communities in order to reduce the negative impact of a prison sentence and provide better opportunities for sustained and positive family contact.
Within the prison walls, research has already shown that prisoners who receive visits from their family are more likely to have positive outcomes on release, with improved prospects for accommodation, education and employment. Therefore the project will look at ways to increase prison visits, remove the barriers to visitation such as cost and transport and make prison visits a more positive experience for families.
